When to use emojis in your business’ social media posts?

Emoji’s have become the newest language used to create informal conversations with audiences through social media. They also occasionally make their way into above and below the line marketing outlets. Why is this? They have the power to communicate alot by only showing a little. So how do you know if you should be using them for your business? 🤔

Imagine what your business would sound like if it was a person. Would it be outgoing? 😝 Funny? 😂 Straight edge? 😐 Now think of the way your business’ customers communicate. Are they outgoing? Funny? Straight edge?

Each business has its own personality and voice and working out how to effectively communicate with your fan base has as much to do with who you are, as it does with who you are talking to.

Language & tone of voice is very important in social media as it humanises your business. However, knowing what language and tone to use depends entirely on how well you know your audience. You would hardly use slang if you are selling technical computer software to professional businesses, or legal jargon if you sell sports drinks to young athletes. Understanding who it is you are talking to is the first step in appropriately reflecting your brands personality.

Emoji’s are used on social media to connect with your audience on a more personal level. People want to feel like they are talking to another human being, not a faceless logo. Emojis have the power to communicate a lot by only showing a little. Not all people read all the copy in your social media posts (how dare they! 😲), so using emojis to get your message across lets your audience understand what you are saying without saying too much.

However, not all businesses may benefit from using emojis. 😥 As they are generally used to create more personal, informal conversations, they can sometimes come across as unprofessional in certain industries.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to your own judgement. Take a step back, think about what kind of personality your business has and how you want to express yourself to resonate with your audience. 🤗
